"A Simple Desultory Philippic" was already sorta that, so if he'd ever needed to do that, he'd gotten it out of his system. <br />Also, by this point in his career-- in the middle of making his own movie-- why stop to take pot-shots at others?<br />Lastly, Dylan is demonstrably not a one-trick pony, and I don't think Simon or anyone else-- even Dylan's detractors-- level that criticism at him. It's not a charge that would stick.<br />I think the movie (that this song is from) is Simon's way of saying he would pursue music no matter what, even if he'd never hit it big. <br />So the song is about the mixed feelings of seeing a great performance. <br />There is a famous story about an audience member who approaches a virtuoso saying, "I would give anything to play like you."<br />The musician replies, "Well, would you give 7 hours a day?"
