His mind is too restless.Another Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17490204558031016152noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7824464142604361129.post-8266319422580748682019-01-12T12:02:10.763-08:002019-01-12T12:02:10.763-08:00I don't really believe Simon actually could st...I don't really believe Simon actually could stop himself from making new songs. One is that he is actually done and no new songs are forthcoming. One is that he thinks this is likely the case, and wants to manage the public' expectations and relieve himself of the pressure to create.
But in my experience, I agree with David Letterman, who said that "the Genius Switch has no 'off' position." If you are creative, you create. When Simon finally leaves us for good-- and I know we all hope that is many years coming-- I am sure we will find another album's worth of material in his notebooks, waiting for him to decide whether to record them or not. Maybe someone (his son Harper?) will even take them into the studio...
Then again, he may really want to use Blue Light to tie a neat bow on his whole career and just be done. Other professionals get to retire (you don't see many retired accountants saying "OK, just one more tax season...") so why not professional songwriters? If any of them have earned it... I hope it's just tired rambling but maybe this really is his last. He said it in an interview that he felt like a switch just clicked and he felt done with writing new stuff.
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09249035782618082316noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7824464142604361129.post-84057992519930692142018-03-25T17:29:43.441-07:002018-03-25T17:29:43.441-07:00Adam-- The idea of the song being a metaphor for s...Adam-- The idea of the song being a metaphor for songwriting is intriguing. I will have to read through the lyrics again with that in mind, and see if I think it bears out. But yes, the "bridge" being part of a song... would also give an interesting read to Bridge Over Troubled Water.Another Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17490204558031016152noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7824464142604361129.post-17985141063194795912018-03-23T21:41:36.047-07:002018-03-23T21:41:36.047-07:00Just a couple thoughts. I think this song is a list of things that keep you awake.
First, I have been thinking about the river part in the bridge for a while and I like to interpret as his mind running through concerns as an insomniac tends to do, and writers block (the river) is one of them, and he is thinking about that. One of the hardest parts of a song to create is the bridge, so this may not be pure analogy. When he refers to the siren I believe he literally means a police car whizzing by the window frame of his old and very pricey nyc house. If he's in the city, close enough to the street for a siren to do that, then if he stays up long enough he'll be able to hear the conversations or ramblings of the late night wandering homeless crowd. The "street angels" referenced elsewhere in the album. Finally, the music in his ears is probably just an earworm, which is especially distracting when trying to sleep.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10343613934123106326noreply@blogger.com
