It is especially moving for me to know that Paul Simon is one of those things. I am sorry your neighbors don't share your interest, but the Internet has made us all neighbors, in a way.
I am always interested to hear how people connect Simon's songs with each other, and this is one connection I had not considered. Yes, the two figures have much in common. Many of Simon's character are lonely and isolated, going back to his early works, with the lines in Bleecker Street about how the fog "hides the Shepherd from His sheep" and in Sound of Silence: "People hearing without listening."
I hope finding a worldwide community that shares your love of Simon's songs helps ease your isolation. That's one thing about music-- it goes around corners and through walls. I am very excited and touched to read your comment, as not much people share the same interest as me in where I live.

When I listened to this song, especially to the line “If you shop for love .... money back”, it constantly recalls me the lonely love-seeking figure in “Proof of Love”. I would rather interpret this line more conceptually — the Pilgrim spent his time, soul, and labor in finding this “proof of love”, yet returned with both hands empty, and now he feels a mixture of loss, despair, and regret.
